she's got herself a little piece of heaven

well, it's that time of year (again) when i make what's becoming a pretty damn frequent pilgrimage to provincetown. the other day i wondered if maybe i was getting tired of it. then my head was flooded with 8 years of fantastic memories. and in ptown, i keep discovering new and wonderous things. i often wonder what's next. above all, it's nice to have found a place you can truly go back to.

there will be a lack of posts here as i escape this dreadfully long, hot, oppressive southern summer for the cooler climes of the cape. but you can bet there will be stories and maybe even a few pictures on my return.

peace out, y'all.

live to tell
you know, listening to senator craig this morning on NPR, i lost count of how many times he said "i am not gay." to quote a certain english playwright, "methinks thou dost protest too friggin' much."

of course the downside of all this is that now the straight world is being taught the particulars of "gay cruising." which means it's certain to become all the rage with the straights, copycats that they are.

this morning's sun was a huge reddish-pink ball, but only for a brief moment. twas a nice counterpart to the silvery gray full moon. my bike rides don't suck.

the clock is ticking and i'm in high efficiency mode. t minus 48 or so hours, y'all. let's hope i can make it.

hanging 'round the ceiling half the time
i think only tray b. will get that reference. well, he and neko case. and here i use it in the most positive way...

so yesterday might have been absolutely perfect. i was up at 7, no sign of diane. had a good breakfast and was out on my bike by 8:30. I rode an hour and a half, all over town. sunday mornings are interesting as this town is deserted, most people sleeping it off, even at 10. but nevertheless, i had a good time waking up homeless people and scaring road-hogging, iPod-wearing joggers. had quality time by myself while waiting for joel and the deej. we visited the special intown Super Wal*Mark to begin our PTown secret shopping. lemme tell ya, the gays were all up in there! and our visit to Party City was chock full o' nostalgia, each of us regaling with tales of the childhood toys we found on each isle. what is not so nostalgic, is that they all now appear to be cheaply made in china.

queens that we are, we were exhausted from shopping and had to lunch. eriK crawled out of his lair and joined us at Six Feet Under. cholesterol and beer were had. mmmmm, oyster po' boy!

cut to trey's for a little pool party cook-out action. well, the pool part lasted all of 30 min as the heavens opened up and a tempest blew in. i'm not sure if it was the alcohol or the fact that our August Inferno was broken by the torrential downpours, but damn if there weren't a dozen adults acting like complete children, inside, laughing, playing dice, telling jokes, sharing memories....i think polly was in attendance 'cause we damn sure tried to channel her. i imagined her at that table, roling the dice, enforcing the rules. it was lovely.

i was home by 7:30, took gus for a real long walk, putterred around the garden in the eery orange gloaming, rolled around on the floor with the dog and was in bed, as happy as i can remember, by 10 o'clock.

and it occured to me this morning that i am blest y'all. blest.

fashion

can i just say for the record that i absolutely hate empire-waist dresses? nothing makes a woman look more frumpy, fat and/or pregnant than that ugly high waistband and blousy skirt. *gag*

who's that lady?
it's just a multi-media thursday here at the worldwide headquarters of akafrankgreen.

check out these pretty ladies

and in other news, today's list features things seen on my morning ride:
* a flock of geese
* a big red sun, seemingly late rising. in this heat, everything's sluggish y'all.
* a good looking hustler, finishing up his shift at 8th and w. peachtree.
* a tranny homeless person, applying makeup, legs crossed, using a compact.
* my friend jonathan and his dog scout and my friend jody. not together.
* a hot daddy waiting on the bus with his cute son. awwww.
* too many tear-downs and not enough quality construction. what's up with that shit?

kaltes klares wasser
i hate to be one to harp about the weather, but good lord, it's freakin' hot here. 105 today, about the 15th straight day of triple digit temps, with no end in sight. people are going crazy. they're cranky and everything is dying. i'll be lucky to have any hydrangea next spring. and then what kind of Old Southern Woman would i be? huh?

T minus 10 days till i'm enjoying a nice cool ferry ride across Cape Cod Bay. 'nuff said.

sing, my sister, sing
for once i'm all over a release that's not yet been released. that would be annie lennox' new one, songs of mass destruction. so far i've heard two great tracks. keep 'em coming y'all.

the dentist this morning was as expected -- torture on the scale of Midnight Express. geez louise, the nerves in my mouth are FUCKED UP! at least i got to watch The View. i'm not sure which was was worse...

as i was explaining my plans for Provincetown over Labor Day to my parents this morning, i realized just how dumb it was to even come back. all i need to get my work done is a computer and a phone. and had i needed to go to NY for anything, it's quicker from there than it is from here. d'oh. i'll remember this next year.

and so there you have it. it's in the high 90s here for the umpteenth day in a row. my trees are dying and the hydrangea are beyond help. even the poor pachysandra is wilted. this is crazy y'all. it's hell.

summertime, and the living
well hello and welcome to my...blog.

whereas betty butterfield is to summer of 06, brenda dickson and her parodies are to 07.

so where were we? oh yeah, new york and ptown. here's a quick run down:

* new york kinda sucked. some computer glitch had us in baltimore for a few hours waiting to get into laguardia. i literally spent the entire day tuesday on the plane. i was wiped out and bitter by the time i got to the hotel. i was in the office early wednesday, got a bunch of stuff knocked out and was enjoying a good lunch at my new favorite lunch spot by noon. i drank the rest of the way to boston. uff.

* the ferry from boston to ptown was a bit rough, but full of nice looking gentlemen so all was not lost. brad, brad and eddie met me on the pier at sunset and we made our way to brewster st. it was a fast and furious visit. highlights included the Carnival Parade (of which I'm sure there will be pictures....here and elsewhere), tea dance with Alex W, the perfect Hooters girl, being Commerical Street's official greeter, infectious grooves at the A-House, making out with a friend's ex-lover, seducing him back to my lair only to find him vanished. gone. notta trace. hmmmm. was it something i said? whatever. i had some great bike rides, got caught up with matty. we realized we've known each other almost 10 years. good times.

* yesterday was hellacious as the ferries were running late due to high seas, causing us to miss our flight. we managed to score the last hotel room in boston and the 5 of us shoe-horned ourselves into it somehow. i did not sleep. all was not lost, however: i now know 4 good friends' snore patterns. neat. this morning came early and we were back in the sahara atlanta by 9:45. i've done not much more than sleep and eat and cook today. lovely.

* ptown next week anyone? color me there.

i got you babe

i love this picture (even though you cannot see all of me) becasue it gets to the essence of So Sue Me, our triumphant show at Mary's monday night: serious Norma, oblivious PTB. from all reports, we achieved our goal. someone was heard to say "it was a real show, like drag used to be. not like the crap now." exactly.

anarchy in the u.k.
or something like that.

anyway, it's the day of the show, y'all! and if word on the street is any indication, it's gonna be a packed house tonight at Mary's. i know i'll have a seat, right there on the "stage" behind Norma.

so my weekend was spent mostly getting ready for said show. friday i got my biked fixed (again), hit the gym, had some dinner, then welcomed guests. cut to illegal 2am plant watering and busting my neighbor's 17-year old sneaking in the back door. saturday was mostly spent getting ready to go out of town and making props. the visiting director and i had a lovely dinner at latavola and got caught up on various things. i had forgotten how nice it was to read the sunday paper with a friend. and the rest of yesterday was spent rehearsing. i never knew eriK had the pipes in him. geez, she can sing!

so, after tonight i'm up to NY then off to PT for the long weekend. have a good one, y'all.

i'll take you there
hey y'all, hey.

sorry for the paucity of posts, but i've been at a conference in san diego. the conference was ok -- note to ad types: use more video. nothing's worse than hours upon hours of PowerPoint. gag. i could certainly get into living in SD: sunny and 75 everyday, gorgeous waterfront and laid-back, attractive people.

and so i return to the cauldron that is Atlanta in August. the air is a sickly soupy yellow color, the humidity hovers around 98% and the forecast high today, like yesterday and tomorrow, is 100. neat.

which reminds me, this time next week, i'll be in provincetown, probably having some coffee on brewster st, getting my wig ready for the parade.

but first, be sure y'all come to Mary's next Monday for the big show. eriK and michael have been busy writing So Sue Me! an hilarious look at the legal problems of one of Atlanta's most unknown drag queens. me, i am simply the prop, the ditzy blond card girl....on rollerskates.

discuss.

i may be stupid but i ain't that dumb
if anyone knows whatever happened to early/mid-90s atlanta "swing" band Cicada Sings, let me know. they fucking rocked.
edit. note: seems the siren that fronted Cicada Sings has gone on to make really, really cool music in a band called ph balance. why didn't i hear about this?

but anyway, funny how you get a grain of sand in your 'giner and it causes all kinds of angst. ok, i confess, i had two. but i made pearls out of one and the other, well, that'll have to wait. no worries, though.

my ride this morning was pretty exceptional except for the realization that i have to make yet another trip to the bike shop, this time to have the rear disc brake adjusted. it ain't grabbin' nothing. note to dumb bimbettes walking their lap dogs on 20ft retractable leashes, thus blocking the entire park roadway: next time, i take out the dog. trust me on this one.

i'll be in san diego for a conference next week, then basically The Show and ptown for carnival. love that!

she was old and she would have died anyway
wow, what a day! and it's only 1 o'clock.

yesterday i was a man on fire, accomplishing all of monday's work, tuesday's and then some. the reverend and mrs. were at home to greet me along with the World's Sweetest Lab. we chatted and began to get ready for dinner. mom came in off the porch with a package from YourDanceSolutions.com. of course she was curious. no pun intended, but i tap danced out of the truth, not telling her that they were my opaque white capezio tights for the Big Show. it was a close one, trust. dinner at trey and emo's was great and i slept for shit last night, conscious of each and every noise within a mile of my house. neat.

and today. wow. had a dentist visit. all's well except for a fractured tooth that will need to be replaced before labor day. joy. i told her to go ahead and order the truckload of anesthesia, laughing gas and valium. then, eriK and ventured out to dunwoody to be measured for our costumes. it was like another, alternative world: a basement sweatshop filled with suburban housewives making dresses for two gay guys fed up with Atlanta's drag scene. and lemme tell ya, The Ladies gave me hope for a brighter, better world. really.

(and by brighter, i mean with sparkles and sequins and shimmers)
